AI in Farming

Digital technologies are helping farmers achieve more profitability and higher quality yields, while increasing resource efficiency and curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) in particular can enhance the productivity of smart agriculture: connecting, collecting and analysing big data will be key to maximising efficiency, increasing productivity and fighting against climate change.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations member states, has provided a shared blueprint for climate action and prosperity through its ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The European Commission’s recent “Farm to Fork” strategy is at the heart of the European Green Deal aiming to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly.

This debate aimed to raise awareness of ongoing technological changes and their potential for transformation in this field, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis.

Participants discussed how digital technologies such as AI and the IoT, but also robotics, blockchain, High Performance Computing (HPC), and 5G can increase farm efficiency while improving economic and environmental sustainability.
